Happy Monday! Welcome to another edition of But First, Coffee. Since it’s President’s Day, I thought I’d feature the School’s Out cold brew today.
Not only is school out today because it’s a federal holiday, but what better way to start the week than with an indulgent chocolate chip cookie? Or, at the very least, a cold brew coffee that tastes like a chocolate chip cookie.
That was my goal when I created this recipe for Coffee: The New Cocktail. It’s a blend of Chocolate, French Vanilla, and S’Mores syrups. Yep, S’mores. Don’t ask me why. I just thought it tasted good. And when I was working on this recipe, that’s what I had on hand. So I used it. And it was delicious.
There was something satisfying and comforting about coming home from school and having a cookie in the afternoon. Whether it was elementary school or college, that was a ritual I thoroughly enjoyed. Like, “OK, you survived the day. Here’s a treat. Good job.”
Of course, that probably set me up for some unhealthy habits, like rewarding myself with food. But I really don’t care. I’m gonna have my cookie, dang it.
And it’s the same now that I’ve been out of school for … a while. (San Francisco State University, Class of ’90. I’ll let you do the math. Go Gators.) Whether I’m just starting the day or trying to get through it, I like to pour myself a cold brew, add some syrups, and enjoy it while I write. I’m a little better about not rewarding myself with cookies now. But if I can get my coffee to taste like a cookie, I’m going to do it.
Do you have any favorite additions to your coffee?
